Apache Hadoop - Introduction to Scalable Computing

Hot on the heels of our Autumn Bash, we are pleased to announce a follow up event dedicated to Hadoop.

Apache Hadoop is an ecosystem of Big Data processing tools. It was gaining popularity and became an industry standard as a distributed computational platform, because of it's main design principles: scalability, reliability, and availability.

The presentation will discuss the nature of the BigData problems, explain main principles of the Hadoop architecture, give an introduction to the MapReduce computational model. We will review major components of the Apache Hadoop stack, recent innovations and challenges.

Please note: we are unsure of just how much interest there will be in this event. If the demand is high we will have to find a bigger home, but will keep you informed if there is a change. For now it will be Instil HQ. (See registration link at bottom of page.)

Konstantin Shvachko

A veteran Hadoop developer and well-respected industry author and speaker, Konstantin Shvachko is a technical expert specializing in efficient data structures and algorithms for large-scale distributed storage systems. Konstantin joined WANdisco through the acquisition of AltoStor, a Hadoop-as-a-Service platform company, and prior to AltoStor, he was founder and Chief Scientist at AltoScale, a Hadoop and HBase-as-a-Platform company acquired by VertiCloud. Before AltoScale, Konstantin played a lead architectural role at eBay, building two generations of the organization’s Hadoop platform. Prior to eBay, as Principal Hadoop SE at Yahoo!, he worked on the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS). Dozens of publications and presentations to Konstantin’s credit include those in the fields of Big Data Storage, Distributed Computing, Data Structures, Algorithms, Computational Complexity, and Database Theory. He is currently a member of the Apache Hadoop PMC. Konstantin has a Ph.D. in Computer Science and M.S. in Mathematics from Moscow State University, Russia.

If the event is held at Instil HQ we will have a few choice beers on offer. If we have to offsite the event, you may have to buy us one instead. No Boojum's on offer this time I'm afraid!

You can register for the event at bash11.eventbrite.com

Update!

Great talk Konstantin, thank you. Here are the slides to the presentation.
